Crooked, crowded, gapped, or misaligned teeth can make you feel self-conscious and increase your risk of cavities and other oral health problems.
At Fairfax Family Dental Care, we offer various forms of orthodontics to help you achieve a straighter, more symmetrical smile at any age.
Want to learn why so many patients choose to undergo orthodontic treatment?
Some patients with severely misaligned bites face a higher risk of developing temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder and tooth wear. Orthodontics can restore balance to your bite for improved comfort and health.

Have you been told you need braces?
Orthodontics is a specialty of Dr. Simanek and Dr. Kirksey at Fairfax Family Dental Care. Our goal is to transform your smile into a stunning masterpiece that you will be proud to show off. If you are looking for a Fairfax or Vienna orthodontist who is dedicated to the care of your teeth and smile, please contact Dr. Kirksey to set up an evaluation appointment to find out how he can help you build the confidence that you deserve.
During your evaluation at our orthodontics office in Fairfax, Va., your dentist will determine if you are a candidate for orthodontics or if another treatment would better suit your needs. If you are an ideal candidate, Dr. Simanek or Dr. Kirksey will follow up his examination with impressions, special x-rays, and measurements of your teeth and mouth. You will then come in for a pre-treatment consultation to discuss your individual orthodontic plan.
Orthodontics is a form of dentistry that focuses on improper bites. Most people correlate orthodontics with braces, and while braces are the most common application, there are other alternatives used as well.
Aside from the aesthetic appeal of orthodontics, it is also beneficial for correcting or preventing oral complications. Having straight teeth helps reduce the risk of injury and tooth decay. Prominent, protruding or crowded teeth increase the likelihood of oral trauma and can be harder to clean. Orthodontics also corrects poorly aligned bites that can cause excessive wear on your teeth and increase the risk of developing TMJ problems.
If you are concerned with the development of your child's teeth, you should contact us immediately for a consultation. As an experienced family dentist serving Northern Virginia patients for over 30 years, Dr. Kirksey and Dr. Simanek also specializes in orthodontics. Dr. Kirksey and Dr. Simanek can easily determine the appropriate measures to take concerning your child's bite and teeth alignment. All children should be evaluated for orthodontic treatment by the age of six because new techniques in dentistry allow problems to be resolved in early development. Dr. Kirksey and Dr. Simanek has the potential for correcting children's teeth while they are still growing to eliminate the need for braces in the future. If braces are still required, early treatment can reduce the amount of time in braces. An arch expander is one application used in early childhood to correct any problems. Many times this device is used to create proper alignment of the arches so permanent teeth may grow in a natural position.
Braces are retainers, bonded brackets, arch wires and elastic bands that move crowded or spaced teeth into a "normal" position for appearance, prevention and function. Brackets are bonded to the front surface of each tooth and wires are attached to the brackets with elastic bands. The slight tension on the wire is gently transferred to the bracket through the elastic band. Over a period of time, teeth will shift as gentle pressure is applied. Our Fairfax orthodontics office utilizes the latest treatments, which are faster and more comfortable than ever.
Adult "invisible braces" are a new technique used to obtain the results of braces but without the brackets and wires! These invisible braces are actually clear retainers used to improve the appearance of adult teeth with mild to moderate crowding. This technique utilizes a series of retainers that are worn sequentially until the desired correction is achieved.
She's wearing "invisible braces" in one of these two photos. Can you tell which one? It's difficult to tell, isn't it? That's the whole point!
